Taught by faculty master trainers, TeamSTEPPS is an evidence-based set of teamwork tools aimed at improving communication and interprofessional collaboration in the healthcare setting. Students attend workshops to gain the necessary skills for today’s competitive healthcare market.

Jump Start Experiences

Get revved up for the healthcare profession through faculty and mentor-led activities offered twice a semester.

Community Service

Community service is essential for healthcare providers — fostering a deeper connection with the community, enhancing empathy, and promoting a broader understanding of diverse health needs. These experiences lead to more compassionate and effective care. Carthage allied health sciences students can participate in both on-campus and off-campus community service projects throughout the year. Community partners have included: The Sharing Center, Homeless Assistance Leadership Organization (HALO), Feed My Starving Children, and the Westosha Senior Center.

First-Year Mentor Program

The Allied Health Science (AHS) Mentor Program is designed to support first-year students by pairing them with experienced AHS majors. Through these connections, new students gain valuable insights and guidance as they navigate the major, college life, and their future careers. The goals of the AHS Mentor Program are to:

  • Connect mentees with positive role models within the Carthage community.
  • Provide support to ease the transition from high school or previous institutions to Carthage.
  • Offer early access to a network of aspiring healthcare professionals.

Grand Rounds

Participate in discussions of clinical cases presented by graduate students with physicians. Excellent opportunity to develop interprofessional practice skills.

Healthcare Heroes Program

Students earn points for participating in AHS events like Jump Start, mentor meetings, and Journal Club. Extra points come from mentoring, hosting, or using academic support services. At the year-end Ice Cream Social, points are traded for raffle tickets to win prizes like AHS gear and gift cards.

Journal Club

Become part of a community to develop your research and article evaluation skills through weekly educational meetings.

Student Organizations

AHS majors can get involved in multiple student clubs and organizations, such as Phi Epsilon Kappa, Pre-Health Club, and Athletic Training Club.

Study Abroad

Understand patients’ cultures by visiting other countries on J-Term study tours such as the medical missions in Nicaragua, Belize, Honduras, and Costa Rica.
