As an Allied Health Science major at Carthage, you’ll take courses and electives in allied health science, biology, chemistry, exercise and sports science, and physics.

Interprofessional Practice in Healthcare: Foundations
AHS 1000 / 4 credits
This course offers students foundational training in essential patient care techniques applicable across various healthcare professions. Participants will acquire hands-on experience in basic life support procedures and receive certification in the Stop the Bleed program. Additionally, the course introduces interprofessional collaboration concepts, emphasizing teamwork and communication strategies to enhance patient safety and care quality, culminating in a TeamSTEPPS certification.

Introduction to Health Care Professions
AHS 1200 / 4 credits
Students will explore a variety of health-related disciplines and create an academic plan for their chosen career path. Specific healthcare pathways available at Carthage will be looked at more thoroughly. The concept of inter-professional practice will be introduced and strategies implemented.

Introduction to Music Therapy
AHS 1300 / 2 credits
This course will provide an overview of the health care profession of Music Therapy with a focus on the principles, frameworks, and applications of therapeutic music across a variety of clinical populations. Basic brain and neurological responses to music as well as the social and psychological influences of music will be explored.

Medical Terminology
AHS 2000 / 2 credits
This course teaches students how to understand and use the language of healthcare professionals. Using a systems approach, students study, analyze, and interpret root words, prefixes, and suffixes, emphasizing spelling, pronunciation, definition, and medical terms.

Applied Statistics for Health and Human Services
AHS 2330 / 4 credits
This course presents a practical approach to utilizing statistics in situations encountered in the Health and Human Services professions. Fundamental statistical theories and concepts are presented to help students understand the rationale and purpose of using statistical computations.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing

Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity (DIV) (WEL)
AHS 2700 / 4 credits
This course explores how social, economic, and environmental factors influence health outcomes and contribute to health disparities across populations. Students examine the impact of culture, race, education, income, and policy on health equity and access to care. Through reflection, discussion, and community-based learning, students develop the knowledge and professional awareness needed to promote health equity and advocate for diverse populations within healthcare systems.
Interprofessional Practice in Healthcare: Innovation
AHS 3000 / 4 credits
Students will work within an interprofessional team to develop and deliver a community outreach program, education event or collaborative government project. Weekly peer discussions will provide a sharing and reflection of their experiences.
Structural Kinesiology
AHS 3080 / 4 credits
Structural kinesiology is the study of the muscles as they are involved in movement. This class will cover in detail the origin, insertion, function, and innervation of the major skeletal muscles as they relate to human movement.

Medical Research Review I
AHS 3101 / 1 credit
The healthcare student develops the skills required to critically review published work and discuss findings among peers.
Prerequisite: Junior standing and AHS 3330
Medical Research Review II
AHS 3102 / 1 credit
The healthcare student develops the skills required to critically review published work and discuss findings among peers.
Prerequisite: Junior standing and AHS 3101
Healthcare Informatics: A Global Approach to Data, Systems, and Care
AHS 3439 / 4 credits
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of healthcare informatics with a focus on global health systems. Students will explore how data, information technology, and digital systems are transforming healthcare delivery around the world.
Prerequisites: Junior standing and Allied Health Science or Healthcare Administration major.
Interprofessional Practice: Immersive Experience
AHS 4000 / 4 credits
The student will experience a clinical, internship, or field placement in their preferred healthcare field. Participation in a TeamSTEPPS workshop will provide the student with interprofessional practice knowledge before beginning the assigned experience. The final project will consist of a case study poster presentation.

Evidence-Based Practice in Health Care
AHS 4469 / 4 credits
The student is to apply scholarly research methods mastered in Evidenced Base Practice in Healthcare. The student will produce a secondary research paper on a faculty approved topic culminating in a poster presentation at the Celebration of Scholars.
Prerequisite: EXS 2330 with a grade of C- or better

Grand Rounds Seminar
AHS 4500 / 1 credit
This seminar course provides undergraduate students with unique opportunities to attend the weekly Grand Rounds presentation and discuss these topics with physicians. Students will gain a deep and broad understanding of many challenges within the healthcare field, along with novel theories, research findings, and clinical treatments.
Prerequisite: Junior standing
Senior Seminar
AHS 4900 / 4 credits
The student is to apply scholarly research methods mastered in Evidence-Based Practice in Health Care. The student must update their literature review or case study and write a research paper and poster presenting their findings.
