Allied health science program core values
We believe that developing healthcare professionals who can effectively work within an interprofessional team while thinking critically and integrating evidence into practice is essential.
Program outcomes
Provide students with a multidisciplinary foundation in health sciences to prepare them for careers in the healthcare industry.
Prepare highly competent professionals who improve health outcomes by excelling in interprofessional communication, teamwork, and the delivery of safe, ethical, patient- centered care.
Create a passion for knowledge, resulting in life-long learners.
Develop individuals who can formulate appropriate questions, organize and test hypotheses and apply research results to improve healthcare outcomes.
Students in the allied health science program engage in hands-on learning.
Practice vital skills such as blood pressure assessment and patient interaction, which builds competence and confidence.
Prepare for professional healthcare programs through faculty-guided learning environments.
Integrate anatomical knowledge with hands-on application, using models and clinical resources to identify structures and deepen your understanding of human movement and function.
Apply principles of movement and clinical assessment through hands-on practice, working closely with faculty.
Work alongside faculty to practice patient assessment and therapeutic techniques that support safe, effective care in real-world healthcare settings.
Learn essential patient care techniques, including assistive device fitting and instruction, through hands-on practice with faculty.
Gain hands-on clinical experience practicing essential skills such as injections and patient care techniques, guided by faculty to ensure safety, precision, and confidence.
Gain hands-on experience with diagnostic tools such as electrocardiography (EKG), applying clinical knowledge to assess cardiac function.
Collaborate with faculty to explore human anatomy and clinical application using models and evidence-based resources.
Develop clinical assessment skills through hands-on practice with diagnostic tools.
Gain hands-on experience in injury management by practicing splinting techniques and patient care skills in a collaborative, faculty-guided clinical learning environment.
Allied health science students learn through interactive, hands-on instruction using anatomical models and guided discussion to build a strong foundation in structure, function, and clinical application.
Learn in and out of the classroom
As an allied health science major at Carthage, students complete a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates coursework in biology, chemistry, exercise and sports science, and physics. The program is designed to build a strong scientific foundation while developing applied, clinically relevant skills essential for healthcare professions.
Core coursework includes Introduction to Healthcare Professions, Healthcare Informatics, and Evidence-Based Practice. These courses emphasize integrating foundational science with clinical reasoning, data literacy, and interprofessional practice, preparing students for a wide range of healthcare career pathways and graduate-level professional programs.
Beyond the classroom, students can advance their skills and expertise through workshops, study abroad, and student organizations. Here’s a look at some experiential learning opportunities:
Jump-start experiences
Get a “jump-start” toward the healthcare profession through faculty-led workshops and other mentor-guided activities.
Grand rounds
Weekly physician-led workshops keep students updated on developments outside their core studies while assisting them with inter-professional communication skills.
Short-term study abroad
Regardless of what healthcare career path you may travel, an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion is imperative. At Carthage, you can study abroad to experience other cultures firsthand and learn about medical care in other countries. Options include a twice-yearly medical mission trip to Nicaragua, where students volunteer in rural medical clinics on the island of Ometepe.
Mentor program
The AHS Peer Mentor Program is designed to support first-year students as they transition into the college environment, the allied health science major, and the broader healthcare community at Carthage.
All incoming allied health science students are paired with an upperclass student mentor prior to the start of their first semester. Peer mentors serve as knowledgeable guides, role models, and supportive resources who help new students navigate academic expectations, campus life, and career exploration within healthcare.
Faculty and staff advisors
Aspiring healthcare professionals consult frequently with faculty mentors and Aspire career specialists to select courses that match their abilities and goals. Carthage pre-health students can participate in activities such as interviewing and resume-building workshops.
Student organizations
AHS majors frequently choose to be involved in Carthage’s Pre-Health Club, Phi Epsilon Kappa, and Athletic Training Club.
