Students seeking to earn a Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition (3+2 with Rush University) have the option to enroll in the regular MS program or the Dietetic Integrated Track.

Clinical nutrition is a specialized field that focuses on nutrition’s role in preventing, managing, and treating diseases to enhance the overall well-being of people and communities. They may provide general dietary advice and work with individuals seeking to improve their overall health, but they aren’t qualified to manage specific medical issues. These professionals work in academia, non-profits, government agencies, public health, private industry, research, and wellness.

Students will earn a B.S. in Allied Health Science from Carthage in three years and a Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition from Rush University; this online program can be completed in 16 months as a full-time student. A reduced part-time option can be completed in three to five years. You will have the prerequisites to sit for your certification. Certifications may include Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS), Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN), Diplomate of the American Clinical Board of Nutrition (DACBN), and Diplomate of the Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutrition (DCBCN).

Prerequisites

  • At least one course in biochemistry*
  • At least one course in physiology*
  • At least one course in nutrition
  • At least one course in statistics

*Two semesters of general chemistry and one semester of organic chemistry are typically the prerequisites for biochemistry. The prerequisite for physiology is an introductory biology course.

Applications for the clinical nutrition program are due July 1, with the program beginning in September.

During the student’s first three years, they will complete the allied health science major requirements and Carthage’s general education curriculum. The undergraduate experience will include healthcare-specific opportunities such as Jump Start Experiences, Grand Rounds, and Journal Club. Serving others is central to our mission, so community service events are available throughout the year.

Clinical dietetics is a broad field that includes clinical nutrition, food science, and food systems management. They provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT), a regulated service that manages and improves health conditions through specific nutrition plans. These professionals work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, or community health settings.

Students will spend three years earning a B.S. in Allied Health Science and Ðǿմ«Ã½ and 21-months (full-time, 48-credits) earning a Master of Science (MS) in Clinical Nutrition — Dietetic Integrated Track on the Rush University campus. It includes clinical rotations and community service. After earning your degree, you will be eligible to take the National Examination for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists.

  • Introduction to Foods or Meal Management (minimum 3 credits)

The program application is due July 1, with the program beginning in September. A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is strongly recommended.
