This immersive experience will juxtapose an examination of language and culture with a performance tour that allows students to gain new insights into both Japanese culture and into their own performance. The tour will include extensive experiential learning opportunities with visits to important musical, cultural, and historical sites, while studying the relationship between the musical traditions and the culture of the host country and our own.

Students will participate in pre-departure classroom instruction to prepare them for their interactions with the host culture and people. During the study tour, the day will be divided between performance and organized exploration of local culture. Students will be required to submit assignments to demonstrate their understanding of the integration of culture and music.

This course fulfills the CL and ITL requirements.
