J-Term FAQs

See answers to frequently asked questions regarding J-Term below.
All students must successfully complete two J-Term courses during their time at Carthage. These can be on-campus courses, study tours, or a mix of both. Students must consult with their academic advisors to select their J-Term courses.
Tuition varies depending on several factors, including whether you are a full-time or part-time student, and how many J-Term courses you have taken:
Full-time, full-year students: For students who attend Carthage full-time in both the fall and spring terms, two on-campus J-Term courses are included as part of your tuition for four years. Students taking a third or fourth on-campus J-Term will be charged at the per-credit rate. Study tour costs vary.
Part-time and single-term students: Students who attend Carthage part-time or for a single term (fall or spring) who wish to take a J-Term course on campus or participate in a study tour will be billed for tuition at the part-time per-credit-hour rate and for the study tour and/or material costs.
All students are responsible for their J-Term course material costs and/or other course activity fees.
Students living on campus during J-Term will be charged a housing fee. This includes students enrolled in a course, engaged in student teaching, participating in athletics, working on campus, or completing an internship. Students participating in a study tour or required to remain on campus for athletic practices or competitions will be charged a prorated housing fee based on the number of days they are required to be on campus. For additional information, please consult your study tour professor or coach.
A meal plan is not included with the J-Term housing fee. Students can choose to purchase blocks of meals during J-Term. These blocks of meals are available to both residential and commuter students, as well as other students who are on campus during J-Term, such as student-athletes and student workers. Unused Birdie Bucks from the Fall semester will be available to use during J-Term. See www.carthage.edu/dining for more information.
Starting in January 2026, students who live on campus during J-Term will pay a housing fee of $200 for a standard room, or $300 for a premium room. Students will be able to purchase meal blocks based on their needs. This applies to all students living on campus in January, including students taking a J-Term course, student-athletes, and student employees.
These fees are necessary simply because there are costs associated with living and dining on campus. Over the last several years, costs for utilities, food, and other services during the month-long J-Term have increased. Not all students take J-Term, and not all students live on campus. This new pricing model means that students pay only for the services they use during January, and those expenses are not passed on to the entire student body.
The tuition for two on-campus J-Term courses is still included in a full-time student’s base tuition. For students on study tours who are only living on campus for a short time before traveling, housing fees will be prorated.
On-campus courses, off-campus study tours, and independent studies are graded, and the grade is computed in the student’s grade point average. Field placements receive grades “S” (satisfactory) or “U” (unsatisfactory) and do not affect a student’s grade point average.
