Graphic design major and public relations minor Isabella Kuyava ’28 is gaining real-world, hands-on experience at Carthage, which is helping her toward her career goal of becoming a graphic designer for a public relations firm. Through her courses, she’s had opportunities to work with non-profit organizations and local companies to design logos and other branding materials. “I’ve gotten the chance to promote the Kris Kringle Tour in Racine, Wisconsin; create a campaign for Downtown Janesville; and redesign a menu for a local restaurant.”
In between classes and creative projects, Isabella makes time to enjoy the community near campus. “Anna’s On The Lake is the best coffee place around by far,” she says, “I love going there with my friends and teammates on the weekend or early in the morning to catch up, do homework, and reset our weeks.”

Favorite class
“My favorite class was Intellectual Foundations with Professor Anna Hegland. Although it is a required class for freshmen, I found that Prof. Hegland structured the class to engage her students and allow them to think critically while dissecting literary works. She is passionate about what she teaches and cares deeply for all of her students, which truly makes a difference in the classroom.”
Campus involvement
“I am on the , where I am surrounded by the most impressive and uplifting women. Being a part of a team on campus is something I highly recommend; my sport is an outlet for me, and I wouldn’t trade the community that comes with it for the world.
“Additionally, Fellowship Christian Athletes (FCA) is a group I attend weekly. We meet together to grow in our faith and read passages to relate it back to our sports and everyday lives. This part of the week is a reset for me; meeting with FCA brings calmness to my life and a sense of belonging, which is vital being so far from home.”
Unique opportunities
“Through my Public Relations Writing course with Professor Colleen Palmer, I was connected to the non-profit organization Orchids FASD Services Wisconsin. I was able to work closely with their president to construct a total rebrand of their logo. In my J-Term course, I was connected with the owner of Honey Bee Cafe at a panel hosted by Carthage. I learned that they were still in the process of creating a logo and offered my help. Working with the owner, we created a logo for the coffee shop in Zion, Illinois.”
Internships or campus employment
“At Carthage, I work in the Writing Center as an advanced fellow alongside an amazing group of people who aid Carthage students with writing assignments. In the Writing Center, I have the honor of training the new fellows, as well as being an embedded peer coach for College Success Seminar classes. My favorite part of this job is working with my peers to create something they can feel confident in.”
Favorite spot on campus
“My favorite spot on campus is Starbucks! I love to catch up with my friends or buckle down and get homework done there.”
Favorite memory
“My favorite experience at Carthage was the hot air balloon ride. It was my first few days at school, and I decided to go to an event that Carthage Activities Board hosted with people in my orientation group. I waited in line with people I barely knew, but we were bonded by the end of the experience. Although I didn’t know it then, it was never really about the hot air balloon ride but the company I had with me that led to the start of new friendships with my now best friends.”
Best study tip
“Create time slots in your schedule specifically for studying at the beginning of each semester. By planning ahead, you can stick to a routine and won’t worry or stress out about falling behind and not having time to do your work. Plus, it helps you create good study habits naturally.”
Best tip for making friends
“Join clubs and participate in activities! That is a great way to get introduced to new people and opportunities. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there by talking to new people, whether you are in class, your dorm hall, or simply just out and about. One thing that helped me get over that fear is realizing everyone is in the same boat, trying to find a place to belong and others to connect with.”
