Sara Willis ’29, a double major in mathematics and computer science, has loved math since she was young and is grateful for the opportunity to continue exploring numbers in college. She values the welcoming Carthage community, where small class sizes, supportive professors, and campus traditions create a home away from home, both academically and personally. Beyond the classroom, Sara is also an athlete on the Carthage women’s wrestling team, balancing her academic pursuits with competition.

Why Carthage?
“Carthage was one of the only colleges that I visited that just felt right. I felt a sense of belonging on campus, and Carthage had everything I wanted in a college, such as small class sizes, interactive professors, and many student organizations. Carthage is close to my hometown, but far enough to teach me independence. Overall, Carthage felt like home to me!”
Favorite class
“My favorite class at Carthage is Data Science I. Professor Erlan Wheeler is a great instructor who presents his assignments with humor while also teaching the concepts. It is an asynchronous class, which allows me to learn at my own pace and on my own time.”
Toughest class
“My toughest class so far was Understandings of Religion. As a non-religious person, it was difficult for me to adapt to this context, but it has been one of the most rewarding classes. I am grateful for persevering through this class.”
Campus involvement
“I am currently on the team and a part of the Honors Program here at Carthage.
Favorite memory
“My favorite Carthage memories are from the bingo nights that the hosts on campus. It is great seeing the student community so excited to play bingo and win prizes. Although I have not won yet, I will continue to show up because it is one of my favorite events.”
Best study tip
“Do not procrastinate! Pretend your deadline is much earlier than it is because once you get it done, you will feel so relieved. Also, organization is key! Write down all your assignments right when you get them, and this will help you prioritize and remember what needs to be done.”
What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?
“My 8-year-old self would not be surprised — ever since I was little, I loved doing math problems. I even have a picture of myself asking my teacher for more math homework. I feel like I always knew I wanted to have a career in math. However, I would be shocked by computer science because I didn’t even know it existed. I remember doing little block codes in elementary school, but I would never have thought I would pursue a profession in it. I just know I would be proud of myself for how far I’ve come.”
