Nursing

Theresa Kissack ’27, a nursing major at Carthage, has grown as a student, an individual, and a future nurse during her time on campus. Through her courses, she has been exposed to new ways of thinking while building a strong understanding of the human body. Her involvement in the and taught her how to give back to the community and develop interpersonal skills. She was able to put these lessons into action during a J-Term trip to Honduras, where she helped provide medical care and access to clean drinking water to the local communities.

When she’s not studying or volunteering, Theresa enjoys exploring Kenosha and all it has to offer. Whether running along the lakeshore, snapping photos with friends, or exploring local shops, Theresa has created countless memories in Kenosha. “I love spending time in Kenosha, especially visiting the farmers markets near campus on fall and spring weekends,” she says.

Why Carthage?

“Aside from the beautiful lake views, I chose Carthage because I loved the idea of being a part of a small community and still getting the full college experience!”

Favorite class

“Pathophysiology has been my favorite class because it helped connect everything I previously learned about anatomy and physiology. I learned how the body’s normal functions relate directly to disease processes, which changed the way I think as a future nurse. It was a lot of hard work, but I enjoyed studying and learning. I saw my progress and growth in my exam scores as the course went on.”

Campus involvement

“I am a member of sorority, Habitat for Humanity, Carthage Association for Nursing Students, and !”

Unique opportunities

“I went on a J-Term trip to Honduras, which was truly a life-changing experience. While there, I practiced many of my nursing skills and learned new ones. We provided medical care to so many people with limited access to healthcare. It helped me grow in confidence, adaptability, and cultural awareness. My favorite experience in Honduras was giving clean water filters to families. We built the filters ourselves and taught each family how to use and maintain them in their homes. Water is essential to health, and having access to clean water plays a critical role in preventing disease and promoting overall well-being. These filters will provide up to 10 years of safe drinking water to help prevent parasitic infections, making the experience incredibly meaningful.”

Career goal

“My career goal is to work as a labor and delivery nurse or as a neonatal intensive care unit nurse, caring for mothers and newborns during some of the most critical and meaningful moments of their lives.”

Best study tip

“One of my most effective study strategies is forming study groups. They strengthen my retention, expose me to different ways of thinking, keep me accountable during late-night study sessions, and make learning much more engaging and enjoyable.”

Best tip for making friends

“The best way to make friends on campus is to get involved and be yourself — people will love who you are without you having to change.”
