Major(s)
Chemistry, Neuroscience
A double major in chemistry and neuroscience, Alexander Centeno ’29 values being part of a supportive community while growing academically toward his career goals. Through his involvement in the , , , and Intramurals, Alexander has made friends who share his interests and found that staying actively engaged on campus has boosted both his mood and productivity. One of his proudest achievements has been joining the Carthage cheer team and finding a group of supportive peers who push him to reach his potential. “Since joining the team, I’ve been met with various challenges, such as physical and time management,” Alexander says. “But instead of putting me down, those challenges push me forward, making me more resilient.”
Alexander’s long-term goal is to earn a doctorate, become the first in his family to do so, and pursue a career as a research scientist in academia, industry, or applied research environments. Through his on-campus job as a lab assistant and research opportunities shared by his professors, he is actively following that path.

Faculty mentors
“I have formed many connections with various members of the Carthage faculty. They have all been very supportive in helping me understand what I am learning. Furthermore, they are open and honest about extracurricular opportunities, which have been crucial to me as a STEM double major seeking research and lab experience.”
Favorite class
“My favorite classes at Carthage so far have been Chemistry 1020 and the Physics for Future Presidents J-Term course. I consider them my favorites because of professors Christine Blaine and Kevin Morris, and also because of the topics!”
Internships or campus employment
“I have been fortunate to be a lab assistant, which is a fantastic way to further pursue my passion for chemistry and build a lab-based experience portfolio.”
Favorite spot on campus
“My favorite spot on campus is definitely the David A. Straz Jr. Center because it houses so many places to study, work, and nerd out. I also love how open and welcoming the building is, with so many windows facing the lake and floor-to-ceiling whiteboards I can use to get all my notes out in front of me.”
Best study tip
“Whether you’re new to studying or amazing at it, you can almost always benefit from working alongside someone who is equally as productive as you. A studious friend or classmate can help you stay on task, feel less isolated or alone if you get confused by something, and help you make studying more memorable. Additionally, the science behind having a supportive friend next to you shows that you’re more likely to experience a dopamine release, meaning you will neurologically have more fun studying!”
Best tip for making friends
“Realize that everyone is just as nervous as you are, and know that welcome week is the easiest time to meet new people. You’ve just got to throw yourself out there a little.”
What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?
“8-year-old me wanted to be a professional soccer player and a scientist, so I think they would be happy that I’m still on track for at least half of their dreams.”
