Public Relations
A major in public relations at Carthage, Erik Nelson-Sandall ’26 has a goal of one day working in a public relations firm. Thanks to The Aspire Program, the College’s career planning initiative, Erik was able to enroll in a J-Term Career Planning course. Through the class, Erik had the opportunity to visit local businesses and gain an eye-opening, behind-the-scenes look at the operations that keep them running — an experience that will benefit his future career.
Outside of academics, Erik’s love of cooking draws him to Kenosha’s vibrant culinary scene. He frequently visits Tenuta’s Deli, a local Italian grocery store that has a great selection of traditional Italian imports and locally-made Wisconsin products. “It has a great selection of whatever you may need,” he says.

Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because of the small class sizes, which allows students to really feel seen. I also chose the College because of the beautiful campus. Even during the winter, I enjoy looking out at the lake.”
Faculty mentors
“The Carthage faculty have helped me map out a clear path for success. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with so much stuff to do, so having faculty support helps keep me on the right track.”
Favorite spot on campus
“My favorite spot on campus is . I love watching and nature, so taking the walk down there and seeing the creek is always fun for me.”
Favorite memory
“I’m a big sports fan, so sporting events are always my favorite. Specifically when the Carthage baseball team beat the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2023. It was a competitive game, with Carthage coming out on top.”
Best study tip
“Studying is different for everyone, so do what you think you need to do to study. I need to leave my room and go to the library or a coffee shop. The most important thing is to tend to a study procedure that is the most effective for you.”
Best tip for making friends
“I firmly believe that if you just be yourself and put yourself out there, you will find your people; it’s just a matter of time. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t happen right away. Good things take time!”
