Allied health science healthcare career spotlight: Occupational therapy
Occupational Therapy (OT) is a healthcare profession focused on helping individuals participate in meaningful daily activities (occupations) despite injury, illness, or disability. “Occupations” include everyday tasks such as dressing, cooking, writing, working, playing, and caring for others.
OTs address physical, cognitive, sensory, and psychosocial barriers to independence.
Academic pathway
The Allied Health Science Department provides the academic preparation and structured advising needed to successfully enter a competitive occupational therapy professional program.
Our 3 + 2 curriculum model is intentionally designed for student success:
- Years 1-3: Complete allied health science major coursework and general education requirements
- Years 4-5: Focus on graduate coursework in occupational therapy and immersive clinical placements
Through our partnership with Washington University-St. Louis, students pursue a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy, which prepares students to meet eligibility requirements for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
