Here are 20 experiences every Carthage student should check off their bucket list before they graduate.
1. Traveling abroad
For many college students, studying or traveling abroad sits at the very top of their bucket list, and Carthage offers both short-term and long-term options to help make it happen. Through J-Term and semester-long study abroad, students can immerse themselves in a new culture, conduct research in a foreign setting, explore biodiverse landscapes, and make lasting memories with their peers. Popular study abroad destinations include England, Germany, Japan, Costa Rica, Africa, and France.
2. Signing/painting the Kissing Rock
One of Carthage’s most iconic landmarks, the Kissing Rock has been part of the College’s history since 1913, with countless traditions forming around it over the years. Many students have made it a special spot to propose, giving rise to its famous nickname, the “Kissing Rock.” Painting the rock is another beloved tradition — students regularly add their own touches, making it a colorful canvas of campus life. Additionally, every student has the opportunity to sign the rock at the beginning of their first year and again at graduation as a way to celebrate the remarkable milestones of beginning and completing their degree(s).

3. Running the MyCarthage Instagram account
Every week, a different student takes over the account to highlight their life as a Carthage student. This fun opportunity lets students connect with their peers by showcasing what makes their Carthage experience unique, while also creating a sense of community and normalcy for other students. Students can sign up to run the account by completing the MyCarthage interest form.
4. Joining or starting a club
Joining a club is a meaningful part of any student’s college journey, and at Carthage, there’s no shortage of ways to get involved. With more than 130 active student organizations on campus, students can explore their interests, hobbies, and passions while building friendships and finding their community. 5. Participating in bingo!
The monthly bingo nights have become a beloved campus tradition. Hundreds of students come together for an energetic evening of games, friendly competition, and the chance to win exciting prizes. From dorm room essentials to Carthage merch — and even big-ticket items like a PlayStation 5 or Apple TV — there’s nothing quite like the thrill of calling “bingo!” and walking away a winner.

6. Attending an off-campus CAB event
The Carthage Activities Board hosts multiple low-cost throughout the year (with transportation included). Recurring CAB off-campus events include trips to Broadway musicals, sports games, Six Flags Great America, the Renaissance Faire, the Shedd Aquarium, Medieval Times, and more. CAB makes it easy for students to get off campus and enjoy exciting experiences nearby.
7. Scaling the Climbing Wall
The Carthage Climbing Wall is a unique way to exercise while having fun. The wall is available to all members of the Carthage community who want to improve their core strength and stability through this full-body workout — or simply enjoy a fun, social activity with friends. No prior climbing experience is required; staff members will provide instructions to new climbers.
8. Walking through Johnson’s Haunted Halls
A Carthage tradition since the ’90s, students are invited to walk through Johnson’s Haunted Halls every October. Residents of Johnson Hall decorate their floors and dress up in their most spooky outfits to frighten visitors. Students look forward to walking through the displays every year, making it a Halloween activity not to be missed.
9. Cooking a group meal in The Tower
is always a great bonding experience that allows students to take a break from school and focus on having fun. The Tower Residence Hall has kitchenette areas on each floor, allowing students to gather with their friends to cook a meal, have a bake-off, and create memories that make dorm life feel like home.

Homecoming and Family Weekend is one of the most exciting times to be at Carthage. Full of festive activities that celebrate the Firebird community — students can’t wait to participate in the football game, parade, tailgate, and more. Every year, students suit up in their best Carthage apparel, showing off their Firebird pride and making memories with friends, family, and alumni alike.
16. Attending the Christmas Festival
The annual Christmas Festival takes place in December, during which Carthage’s music ensembles perform for the College community. This beloved tradition comes alive with stunning sights and sounds of the season, creating a heartwarming celebration of hope, peace, joy, and love.
17. Watching the northern lights
When conditions are just right — usually during a strong geomagnetic storm — students at Carthage have the chance to witness the northern lights.
