Artwork from the Cybernetic Sensorium exhibition. ‘Cybernetic Sensorium’

H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art

In “Cybernetic Sensorium,” Oksana Kryzhanivska and Zhiwan Cheung explore relationships between nature, virtual environments, and extended realities. Both artists employ 3D modeling software, virtual and augmented reality, and traditional sculptural techniques to connect new technologies with the natural world. The interaction becomes a dance between flesh and data, a strange affinity between humanity and computers. Attend the opening reception for this exhibit from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 and the artist talk from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art.

Artwork from the What Holds exhibition. ‘What Holds’

H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art

A vessel is a witness. It holds material; it holds memory. “What Holds” is a group show of artists using traditional and non-traditional materials to expand the definition of what a vessel can be. These artists consider the vessel not only as an object but as an action — of holding, preserving, or even resisting form. In “What Holds,” containment is not fixed; it spills, cracks, and reshapes itself with intention. Attend the opening reception for this exhibit from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 and the artist talk from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art.

Attend the opening reception for this exhibit from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 and the artist talk from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art.

A photograph from the Surely You Know? exhibition. ‘Surely You Know?’

H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art

Surely You Know? is an archival photographic initiative by Alayna N. Pernell dedicated to returning displaced photographs to Black families. Over three years, Pernell researched and uncovered suppressed nineteenth- and twentieth-century images of Black women held at the Art Institute of Chicago.  Inspired by her 2020 experience organizing family photographs in her grandmother’s home, the exhibition pays homage to the tactile, relational nature of vernacular images while asking what is lost when photographs are severed from the families who made and kept them.  Using handwritten inscriptions and archival traces to locate descendants, Pernell seeks to return these images home, reframing the archive as a site of repair and reunion. Attend the opening reception for this exhibit from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19 and an artist talk from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art.
