SURE in the Natural & Social Sciences
The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program at Carthage was created to provide students with the opportunity to be active participants in an independent research project under the support and guidance of a faculty mentor.
Students and faculty selected for the program receive a stipend, campus housing, and a food budget. Participating students and faculty meet regularly for lunch, professional development, presentations of research progress, and other interdisciplinary social events like our summer kick-off barbecue. Students will present their SURE project at the Carthage-wide annual Celebration of Scholars in spring.
The SURE committee seeks applications from students in their first through third year of study at Carthage and welcomes students from any of the majors offered by the Division of Natural and Social Sciences. The SURE selection process is competitive.
Interested students should identify and work with a research mentor prior to the development and submission of an application. Mentor support should be secured before completing the SURE application.
Applications for SURE 2026 are now closed.
Expectations
A full-time working commitment is expected of the student during the summer experience, including participation in professional development and other interdisciplinary events. The student is also expected to present their work during the summer program and prepare a poster to be presented during a SURE poster session and at the Celebration of Scholars in the spring.
Selection
The selection committee will consider only complete applications submitted to the correct academic division. The selection process for this program is competitive.
In addition to a brief statement (300-400 words) describing how the proposed research and participation in the SURE program will support both your short-term and long-term career interests; a complete application includes your personal information, GPA, major, project title, sponsorship from the student’s faculty mentor, and a recommendation from a second faculty member. Recommenders and mentors will be collected as part of the application form. Students should discuss recommendations with potential faculty members prior to submitting their names into the application portal. As recommendations are due with the application package, students are encouraged to submit their application a week prior to the due date.
Review of applications
A faculty panel consisting of faculty members not participating in the SURE program will review the applications. Successful applicants will be notified by email.
