Majoring in international political economy with a minor in business administration, Katherine Long ’27 credits Carthage’s supportive community for shaping her successful college experience. Through her involvement in organizations like Mock Trial, she has gained valuable, hands-on experience that aligns with her goal of attending law school after graduation. She has also strengthened her professional skills through an internship with the Village of Mount Pleasant, where she assists the district attorney.
Beyond academics and internships, Katherine emphasizes the impact of Carthage faculty who encourage students to explore opportunities outside the classroom. One standout experience included traveling to Minnesota to volunteer at the Junior Hockey Championships, an opportunity that broadened her perspective and enriched her time at Carthage. Reflecting on this support, Katherine says, “If you vocalize an interest or something you are looking for outside of the classroom, I can’t think of a single faculty member who wouldn’t go out of their way to help set something up.”

Why Carthage?
“I initially was interested in Carthage due to its tight-knit community, large number of student involvement groups, hands-on faculty, small class sizes, and niche programs. And, of course, after touring the campus and seeing the lake, I knew I had to come here.”
Favorite class
“I loved my International Relations course with Professor Jeffery Roberg. While it is still one of the most challenging classes I have taken, it didn’t matter because the course content was beyond interesting and extremely well taught. I could feel myself learning. I still apply much of what I learned from that class to other courses I take now.”
Campus involvement
“I am a member of , a local sorority on campus. Our philanthropy is mental health awareness, and we value integrity, ambition, and unity. I currently act as our Zeta floor manager, so I get to paint the floor and work with maintenance to change it. I am also one of our junior new member educators. I get to make our head educator’s job easier while she acclimates our new members to the sorority. I also joined the Mock Trial team my freshman year and now work as an intern for the coach, Prof. Phegley. I formed a great core group of friends through Mock Trial after spending so much time traveling with them. Additionally, I recently joined the TEMPO Kenosha and Carthage School of Business Mentoring Program.”
Unique opportunities
“I had the opportunity to accompany my advisor, Professor Jim Padilla, and a few other students to St. Paul, Minnesota, where we stayed for nearly two weeks volunteering at the Junior Hockey Championships. It was a phenomenal experience, and I met many other incredible volunteers.”
Internships or campus employment
“I currently intern with the Village of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, where I assist the district attorney with initial appearances during traffic court. I plan to attend law school after graduating from Carthage, so this has been an extremely helpful opportunity to gain insight into what it is like to work as an attorney or a judge.”
Favorite spot on campus
“The red chairs by the lake are my favorite spots to sit on campus. I have had some incredible conversations with some great people on those chairs in beautiful weather!”
Best study tip
“Turn your phone off and find somewhere comfortable where you won’t be bothered. Also, make sure you are sleeping enough so you have the energy to focus when you are studying.”
Best tip for making friends
“Get involved in as much as you can and have a sense of humor! Almost every single friend I have made at Carthage has been through a club or an other extracurricular.”
