Social Media Coordinator at Jockey International Inc.

Sara (Redalen) Swartz ’22 graduated from Carthage with a major in public relations and a double minor in communication and sociology. She was a recipient of several scholarships, including the 150 Years of Women at Carthage Scholarship, the Pi Theta Scholarship, and the Quickenstedt Scholarship. Now, she works as a social media coordinator at Jockey International Inc., where she brings the company’s brand voice to life across digital platforms. Her tasks include managing day-to-day channel performance, analyzing insights, and supporting content planning and production. “I work cross-functionally to ensure our social presence reflects both the legacy of the brand and a modern, engaging experience for our audience,” she explains.

Mrs. Swartz stays involved with the Carthage community by attending alumni and donor events and being a mentor in the College’s Mentoring Program. “I love being able to support someone who was in the same position I once was and to be the kind of mentor I wish I had at that stage. Staying involved matters to me because of the impact Carthage had on my life, and it feels really meaningful to give back and stay connected to that community.”

“Being able to connect with people in real time, engage in conversations, and turn everyday moments into something meaningful for a brand and its audience is what makes my career so rewarding.”

What have you enjoyed most about your career?

“What I’ve enjoyed most about my career is the balance between creativity and strategy. I love bringing ideas to life through content while thinking about the bigger picture: how it performs, how it resonates, and how it shapes a brand over time. The fast-paced nature of social media keeps things exciting, and there is always something new to learn or adapt to.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“My experience at Carthage really helped me learn how to think both creatively and strategically, which is something I use every day in my career. I was constantly writing, presenting, and collaborating, so I became comfortable communicating ideas and adapting them for different audiences. I also had the chance to gain real-world experience early on through internships and on-campus roles, which made the transition into a full-time career feel much more natural. Being involved in things like and Pi Theta Sorority, and serving as a communications fellow helped me build confidence, work closely with others, and take on leadership opportunities. Looking back, Carthage gave me both the practical experience and the mindset to navigate a fast-paced, ever-changing field like social media.”

Why did you choose Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because it felt like a place where I could really grow, both personally and professionally. The smaller class sizes and close relationships with professors stood out to me right away, and I liked the idea of being part of a community where I wouldn’t just be another student in a lecture hall.”

What opportunities were made possible because of your Carthage experience?

“Carthage opened the door to a lot of hands-on opportunities that helped shape my career path. Through internships and real-world experiences, I was able to apply what I was learning in real time, whether that was supporting communications efforts in the mayor’s office for the City of Kenosha or gaining early experience in digital marketing and content strategy. One moment that really stands out is when my internship at Snap-on turned into a full-time role that was created for me. During that process, I found out that both my potential manager and director were Carthage alumni and had even been part of the same sorority. It was such a full circle moment and really showed me how strong and supportive the Carthage network is, even beyond graduation. All of these experiences gave me a strong foundation and helped lead me to where I am today in digital marketing and social media.”

What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?

Professor Colleen Palmer had a profound impact on both my academic experience and my career path. She was not only a professor, but also a trusted advisor and confidant during my time at Carthage. Her insight, support, and encouragement helped shape my confidence early on and pushed me to grow both personally and professionally. Since graduating, she has remained an important mentor and someone I can continue to learn from as I navigate my career. I’m incredibly grateful for the relationship we’ve built and the role she’s played in my growth.”

What role have the values in Carthage's mission, "Seeking Truth, Building Strength, Inspiring Service — Together" played in your life?

“Since graduating, I’ve continued to grow by staying curious, pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, and taking on new challenges in my career. In a field like digital marketing and social media, there is always something new to learn, so I’m constantly seeking out ways to improve and stay adaptable. I’ve also focused on building strong relationships and contributing in meaningful ways, whether that’s through collaboration, mentorship, or simply showing up as someone others can rely on. Overall, I try to carry those values into both my personal and professional life by continuing to learn, grow, and contribute wherever I can.”

What's your favorite Carthage memory?

“Some of my favorite memories at Carthage are actually tied to the relationships I built. As a commuter, I really leaned into getting involved in clubs and organizations, and that’s where I formed some of my closest friendships. Those relationships have continued well beyond graduation. I got married in 2025, and my classmates and Pi Theta sisters were part of my wedding. It’s really special to see how those connections have grown over time. Carthage gave me the opportunity to build meaningful relationships, and those friendships and shared experiences are something I will always value.”

Tips for current Carthage students?

“Take full advantage of all the resources Carthage has to offer. From networking opportunities to library access to simply being on campus, there is so much available to you in one place in a way that is hard to replicate after graduation. It’s amazing how many doors can open during your time there, especially when it comes to scholarships and building connections. I would especially encourage students to lean in during their junior and senior years because that is when so many of those opportunities really start to come to life.”
