A double major in biology and music, Katherine Rieckmann ’28 has found opportunities at Carthage that engage both of her fields of study. Through the Biology Department, she has conducted research as early as her freshman year, examining phages and genomes, and presented her findings at a poster presentation. She is also active in the Pre-Health Club and Biology Club and works as a lab assistant.
On the musical front, Katherine is a member of the Treble Choir and the Philharmonic Orchestra. She even took a J-Term trip to Germany and Austria with the Philharmonic to perform in Vienna. Because Carthage allows students to study multiple fields, Katherine has found both ease and joy in pursuing her passions alongside her academics.

Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage for its amazing atmosphere. Every time I toured Carthage, it was always a very friendly environment. I was also drawn to the perfomance opportunites at Carthage. I loved seeing the Christmas Festival for the first time and wanted to be a part of it.”
Faculty mentors
“The Carthage faculty have had a huge impact on my life and have helped me succeed. All of the professors are very welcoming, and if needed, I can walk into their offices for help. “I’m involved with the varsity team, am a part of the Treble Choir and the Philharmonic Orchestra, and a member of the and .”
Internships or campus employment
“I currently have three on-campus jobs that give me many opportunities. My first job is being a lab assistant, which has given me a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in classes and prep work. I also work as a tutor, which gives me experience working with my peers. Lastly, I work on the events team for the Office of Visual and Performing Arts, organizing recitals and performances across campus.”
Career goal
“My career goal after Carthage is to work as a physical therapist.”
Favorite spot on campus
“My favorite spot on campus is the area behind The Tower Residence Hall, where the outdoor volleyball court is located. It is so nice in the fall and spring to go sit there by the lake and study or read. It is very peaceful.”
Best study tip
“Studying in a non-distracting place over multiple days and not cramming the night before a test are study habits I use.”
Best tip for making friends
“The best way to make friends is by just being yourself. I became friends with my roommate just because we both liked BUBBL’R. Put yourself out there, talk to others, and reach out.”
