A double-major in mathematics and secondary education, Lauren Grames ’28 believes she’s found a second home at Carthage. Through study sessions with her peers and mentorship from professors, Lauren has built connections that she knows will last a lifetime. Additionally, she cherishes the opportunities the College offers — her favorites being student teaching in Kenosha and attending mathematics conferences. “I am forever grateful for my path, the faculty, the people I met here, and the campus events,” Lauren says. “The memories I have made will be carried with me beyond college.”

Lauren also enjoys exploring the local Kenosha area with her friends. She likes to try out new restaurants, visit the farmer’s market, and attend sporting events. “My favorite restaurants are Captain Mike’s, Kaiser’s Pizza, and Boat House Pub and Eatery,” boasts Lauren. She also enjoys spending time downtown taking strolls on the beach, ice skating, and going on runs.

“I could not imagine being at any other college. Carthage has given me a second family.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because it felt like a home away from home. During my campus tour, I experienced a welcoming community where everyone had a voice. Additionally, I chose Carthage because it has numerous schools nearby for student teaching placements. I was impressed by the Math Department, academics, and qualifications of the professors as well.”

Faculty mentors

“My one-on-one connections with each of my professors have helped me succeed in class. Carthage provides the perfect average class size of 16 students — I could not imagine learning math with hundreds of other students in a lecture hall. I came from a small high school and wanted to foster connections in college to expand my network. Because of my relationships with professors, I have been able to attend math conferences throughout the Midwest and received an off-campus tutoring job. At a larger school, I would not have had these opportunities to network and grow.”

Favorite class

“My favorite Carthage class has been Calculus II. I developed a connection with the professor, and he adapted to my learning style quickly. He was always there to offer extra help when I needed it, and I was encouraged to reach my full potential.”

Toughest class

“My toughest class at Carthage was Linear Algebra because it involved essays and proofs in mathematics. It is a different type of math I had never learned before, and the structure of it had to be perfect to get full credit.”

Campus involvement

“I am involved in the , , , , and . I am also the secretary of the and am incredibly involved in the intramural tournaments.”

Internships or campus employment

“I have an on-campus job as a certified student ambassador, which involves giving tours to prospective students and families, as well as communicating with admissions representatives about the positive tour experience. I am also responsible for training newly hired student ambassadors and working at the admissions front desk.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is The Tower lounge because it is a fun place to work on collaborative assignments, watch sports, hang out with friends, and work on individual homework.”

Best study tip

“Study periodically rather than cram in a lot of information the night before an exam. Plus, I recommend using whiteboards to write down what you know and then go back and fill in any information you do not. Study groups are crucial to success because they allow you to bounce ideas off others, and be sure to find a good spot where you can focus.”

Best tip for making friends

“The best way to make friends is to get out of your dorm room during the first few weeks of school and attend the events Carthage hosts. The events enable students to connect with their community. Study groups, which can sometimes lead to frequent lunch outings or routine hangout sessions, are another way to make friends.”

Biggest surprise

“The biggest surprise so far is how quickly I adjusted to college once I got into a routine. I have a supportive community behind me that pushes me to take risks I would have never been comfortable with before. My friends, boyfriend, and professors support me — making Carthage my home away from home.”
