Raghad Al Dirani M.Ed. ’24 attended Carthage as a Target Language Expert while completing a Master of Education in Second Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics. Ms. Al Dirani currently works as a lecturer at CPE Lyon and Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 in France, where she teaches linguistic courses. She is also working toward a PhD with a focus on the cognitive linguistics of verbs of olfaction in English. 

Her accomplishments extend beyond her academic and professional roles. Recently, Ms. Al Dirani won a Peace Award from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in France for her work promoting peacebuilding in post-war Lebanon.

What have you enjoyed most about your career?

“I enjoy applying what I learned at Carthage — education philosophies, second-language acquisition from a linguistics perspective, and mental health aid — to my teaching.”

How has your liberal arts education benefited you?

“My liberal arts education benefited me by strengthening my capacity for empathy, encouraging student-centered teaching, fostering political open-mindedness, and building my versatility.”

What opportunities were made possible because of your Carthage experience?

“Carthage made it possible for me to pursue a PhD and receive my lecturer position.”

What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?

“PǴڱǰ Patricia Rieman, Vance Dalzin, and Pascal Rollet helped in my success, as well as the TLE colleagues I worked with for two years.”

What's your favorite Carthage memory?

“My favorite Carthage memories are the lake, the parties, the friends, the diversity, graduation, and the American immersion.”
