Why did you choose Carthage?

“I am originally from Carthage, Illinois, so I knew many people from the College before the campus moved to Wisconsin. I got to attend the school using the G.I. Bill after my Vietnam service.”

What opportunities were made possible because of your Carthage experience?

“While at Carthage, I had the opportunity to assist the team, inspiring me to write a book about the sport. The book was about volleyball skills and tactics, which lead to several years of successful coaching both high school and college volleyball. The book won the first all-college creative writing award at Carthage, which was announced at graduation.”

What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?

“Professor Walter Suter was a very good teacher and influence. Some years after Carthage, I worked for six years as the Alice Kibbe Wildlife Station caretaker near Warsaw, Illinois. I hosted a field trip of Carthage biology students there, which Prof. Suter led.”

What's your favorite Carthage memory?

“Before the College moved to Wisconsin, my high school track team used to train at the Illinois campus, and we got to work out with the college track athletes.”

Tips for current Carthage students?

“Make the most of the opportunities offered and get to know your instructors.”
