Majoring in film at Carthage, Rae Raditz ’28 is racking up experiences as she works toward her career goal of becoming a director or cinematographer. She has two on-campus jobs — a social media video editor for Athletics and a podcasting service crew member. Additionally, Rae helped turn the original Carthage play “Terminal Exhale,” focusing on real-life trauma doctors and their experiences with gun violence, into a documentary film.

As a commuter from Kenosha, Rae finds joy in completing her undergraduate studies so close to home and being able to explore downtown Kenosha with her family and friends, getting ice cream, and taking photos.

“My biggest surprise so far has been how people collaborate and want to lift each other up in classes and clubs.”

Rae Raditz, ’28

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because of all the career resources offered by The Aspire Center — from resume help and internship opportunities to the ability to contact them after graduating. I also chose Carthage because of the learning atmosphere. With small class sizes, I get to know my classmates and professors. Also, Carthage offers the Writing Center and the Learning Accessibility Services, which some other colleges don’t have.”

Faculty mentors

“Two faculty members who have impacted me at Carthage are professors Annette Duncan and Jojin Van Winkle. Both helped me with confidence in different ways. Prof. Duncan taught me that, as someone who struggles with talking to large groups, my voice was powerful and gave me confidence in my intellect. Prof. Van Winkle gave me the courage to pursue my passion for filmmaking and make that my major. She guided me through many opportunities this year. Both of these women have helped me grow into myself exponentially.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class so far has been my Intellectual Foundations class with Prof. Duncan because I met one of my closest friends in that class and the small community we built. Even if I was having the worst day, that class made me smile because of the people I was surrounded with.”

Campus involvement

“I am in the  and .”

Internships or campus employment

“I have two on-campus jobs. I work for the Carthage podcasting service as a crew member. I also work for Carthage Athletic Communications, editing videos they put out and helping with social media.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is behind Denhart Hall. There is a volleyball court and a spot where you can sit and watch the water.”

Favorite memory

“Some of my favorite memories from Carthage are my late-night conversations with my roommate, which always keep us up too late and ends with us crying and laughing. Also, one of my friends and I get dinner almost every night. Sometimes, there is a group of us, but it is when some of the best memories are made and where we have gotten to know each other.”

Best study tip

“One of my best tips is listening to film score playlists from different franchises; it helps me to lock in and focus. Another tip is to use the study rooms in the library. There are fewer people and noises there to distract you.”

Best tip for making friends

“Talk to the people in your classes and get involved on campus, whether it is clubs or getting an on-campus job. Also, just say hi to people, even though it can be scary.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“My 8-year-old-self would probably be surprised that we ended up at a college so close to home. Also, out of all the different arts and mediums we tried, we landed on film and photography with the goal to make sci-fi or horror movies in the future.”
