Read about David Abel from writer Elsie Berg ’24 below.

“Writer, artist, and proprietor of Portland’s renowned Passages Bookshop, David Abel, is set to visit Carthage next week to give a reading of his work as well as a talk meant to present a guided tour through his history of experiments with language and how he began his career as a bookstore proprietor and collector, distributor, and scholar.

His reading will pique the interest of readers and writers alike, and his talk will provide insight into one of the career paths that those with a passion for books and writing can pursue!

David Abel is the co-founder of Thirteen Hats, a collective of Portland writers and artists; a member of the Four Wall Cinema collective; and an inaugural research fellow of the Center for Art + Environment of the Nevada Museum of Art. His recent publications include a chapbook of poems, two books based on verbal performance scores, and a new edition, published by Redfoxpress in Ireland, of the visual narrative Carrier, which was first released in a limited edition by Portland’s c_L Books. The first volume of an ongoing hybrid serial work, “Sweep,” is forthcoming from Chax Press in Tucson.

Do you love books? Do you have that fantastical dream of working in bookshops and writing poetry in your downtime? If you do, then come and listen to Mr. Abel’s talk as well as his reading this upcoming Tuesday and Wednesday to gain insight on how that life may be more achievable and less fantastical than you may think!

Join us in welcoming writer, artist, and proprietor of Portland’s renowned Passages Bookshop, David Abel, to campus by attending his talk from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 and his reading from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, both of which will take place in the Niemann Media Theater in Hedberg Library!”
