The continues to serve as an important launching point for the careers of its alumni.

Brady Holbach ’20, a graduate of the Biology Department at Carthage, was a part-time preparator in the paleontology lab, housed in the Dinosaur Discovery Museum in downtown Kenosha. Mr. Holbach’s position was supported by a grant from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and he conserved numerous fossils collected from public lands in southeastern Montana, where the CIP does its summer fieldwork.

Mr. Holbach is flanked on the left by two of his other projects, a Triceratops snout bone on the left, and a Triceratops frill bone on the right.

Grant-supported positions tend to be short-term, and so it was happy news that Mr. Holbach was hired as a full-time technician position at the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology (RTMP; Drumheller, Alberta). The RTMP is the premiere paleontology museum in western Canada, with a field program that focuses on the abundant and locally available Cretaceous-aged fossils. We expect that Mr. Holbach will have many exciting fossils to prepare and conserve, substantially contributing to science and our global fossil heritage.

Mr. Holbach’s success is Carthage’s success: the Paleontology Program at the College is a unique undergraduate experience that fulfills the qualifications for museum employment and graduate school alike. The paleo track sets students up for success by training them in research, fieldwork, and lab work.

During his time in the track, Mr. Holbach served as a field assistant, completed a summer project on the CIP’s fossil turtles, and volunteered many hours in the lab. After graduation, Mr. Holbach was hired as the CIP’s part-time preparator. Altogether, that extensive experience made him a competitive candidate for the RTMP position. Mr. Holbach’s hire is evidence that the Paleontology Program at Carthage is a pipeline for student success.
